Last year, Dario Amodei warned of a potential unemployment rate of 20% due to AI. He has now published proposals on how the government could effectively counteract this issue.
Will the Unemployment Rate Rise to 20%?
In May 2025, Amodei painted a grim scenario: AI models could increasingly take over human tasks, the government would hardly react, and companies would replace workers with machines almost overnight. The public would only notice this change when it was too late. Amodei even envisions a world where economic growth is high and the state budget is balanced—while the unemployment rate stands at 20%.
This dystopian vision seems to be getting closer: although the actual added value of AI is still questioned and some companies are scaling back their AI initiatives for cost reasons, the proportion of layoffs due to AI has significantly increased. According to consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a quarter of all layoffs are now attributed to AI. In a previous analysis based on data from November 2025, this figure was still below one percent.
Anthropic Founders Call for Stronger Regulation
Given this trend, the question arises as to how the consequences for those affected can be mitigated and what responsibility AI companies bear in this regard. In his post, Amodei urges governments to develop regulatory and tax solutions. Higher capital gains taxes or increased taxation of
