The M64 Retro Console: A Nostalgic Nod to the N64
The M64 retro console from Modretro, a remake of the Nintendo 64, supports original cartridges and modern controllers, with plans for new games.
A year after its initial announcement, the M64 retro console from Palmer Luckey's hardware company, Modretro, has officially launched. This FPGA-based remake of the classic Nintendo 64 is designed to support original N64 cartridges, with a price tag of approximately 250 euros.
In 2024, Luckey, who is known for founding Oculus VR and co-founding the defense technology firm Anduril, first introduced a remake of the Game Boy Color through Modretro. In July 2025, he announced the development of the M64, which is now available for purchase.
Compatibility and Controller Options
The M64 is designed to work with original N64 cartridges and controllers, as reported by heise.de. Additionally, it offers compatibility with modern wireless alternatives, such as the Bluetooth controllers from 8Bitdo and Modretro’s own M64 Pro controllers. Like its predecessor, the M64 can accommodate up to four controllers simultaneously.
Modretro has focused on recreating the authentic gaming experience. Luckey noted that he aimed to create a console that embodies the aesthetics of the 1990s while utilizing contemporary technology.
Playing Retro Games on Vintage Displays
For those who wish to relive their gaming memories on vintage televisions, an adapter will be available to support this feature, although it is not expected to launch until late 2026. Meanwhile, the M64 provides HDMI output options at 720p, 1080p, 1440p, or 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.
Users can connect additional accessories via two USB ports, and the console includes a USB power connection and a Micro-SD card slot, with a 16-gigabyte memory card pre-installed.
New Games on the Horizon
In addition to offering classic games, Modretro plans to introduce new titles and remakes of older games. The company is collaborating with developers and larger studios to expand its game library. At launch, four module games will be available for separate purchase, according to heise.de.
The M64 is available in four colors for $230 in Modretro’s online store, but controllers must be purchased separately at a cost of $90 each.
Availability in DACH Region
The retro console can also be shipped to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where it will cost approximately 250 euros, with additional charges of around 100 euros for each controller. For comparison, the 8Bitdo-64 controller retails for about 40 euros.
A bundle of four modules featuring various new games, titled the "Release Titles Bundle," is available for an additional cost of nearly 200 euros. Buyers should also anticipate extra shipping fees and import taxes, which can add approximately 40 euros to the total cost.
