Microsoft is rolling out a new feature for Teams that may not please all users. It will clearly indicate whether you are working from the office or from home. Here are the limitations that apply.

Last year, Microsoft announced an update for Teams that sparked considerable discussion. This feature is designed to automatically recognize and display who is working from home and who has made the journey to the office. The release was originally scheduled for December 2025, but after some criticism, Microsoft postponed it.

Microsoft Teams Launches Wi-Fi Detection

As reported by Windows Latest, the planned release is now being rolled out step by step. The feature is called "Workplace check-in" and works solely through the Wi-Fi connection of your device. Companies can designate multiple networks as office Wi-Fi and even link different buildings, floors, or areas as workspaces. When you connect to these networks in the office, your location is automatically updated in Teams.

If you connect to your Wi-Fi from home, your location remains unchanged initially. However, there is still the option to manually set your location, even if the feature has been activated by the company.

The latter must also be done manually. The "Workplace check-in" is disabled by default. Microsoft emphasizes that users can also turn off the feature even if the company has activated the check-in. However, this is only possible as long as the company allows deactivation. If internal regulations are adjusted and usage becomes mandatory, employees' work locations will be displayed continuously.

The function is initially being rolled out to all companies that use not only Teams but also Microsoft Places. This is the platform for space planning and booking in offices. Through this tool, the aforementioned areas must also be created and linked with networks. Microsoft advises companies wishing to use the feature to communicate the changes transparently to all employees. They should be clearly informed about what the update does, what it does not do, and what settings each user has.
