Massive Shadow Debt Piling Up Among Tech Giants Due to AI Investments
Major tech companies are facing a financial crisis due to hidden debts from AI investments, accumulating nearly $1.65 trillion in shadow debt, as revealed by a Nikkei analysis.

A recent analysis by Nikkei highlights the financial strain that major tech companies are experiencing due to their hefty investments in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. These companies have accumulated hidden debts totaling approximately $1.65 trillion.

To manage their substantial AI investments in data centers and chips, many tech giants are employing a strategy known as shadow borrowing. This involves creating specialized entities that can take out loans to fund AI infrastructure, thereby keeping these debts off their official balance sheets.
Concealed Debts Linked to AI
These tech firms enter into leasing agreements for the use of these resources, allowing them to appear debt-free and creditworthy at first glance. Obligations such as leasing contracts for data centers or agreements for AI chips may not need to be reported in their financial statements, especially if the projects are incomplete or if the necessary GPUs and servers have not yet been delivered, as noted by Golem.
Industry experts, including those from the Bank for International Settlements, regard this shadow borrowing system as potentially perilous. A failure in AI projects or lower-than-anticipated demand could quickly ripple through other sectors of the financial system, as stated in their communications.
$1.65 Trillion in Shadow Debt
The scale of the problem is underscored by the Nikkei Asia report, which reveals that the shadow debts of five major U.S. tech firms—Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle—amount to around $1.65 trillion. This marks an eightfold increase over the past four years.
In addition to these hidden debts, there are nearly $1.35 trillion in liabilities officially recorded on the balance sheets of these tech companies. Meta, in particular, is facing a critical situation, with its concealed debts estimated at around $420 billion, nearly three times its officially reported liabilities.
Oracle, which is collaborating with OpenAI on the AI infrastructure project Stargate, has accumulated more than $270 billion in hidden debts—a thirtyfold increase since 2022. This software company is utilizing leasing agreements with data center operators for its Stargate project.
Optimism for Future AI Revenues
None of the five tech companies were willing to comment on their shadow debts when approached by Nikkei Asia. Currently, their investment expenditures are surpassing revenues, pushing them to rely on the issuance of corporate bonds and new stock. Looking ahead, these firms are banking on significant AI revenues that they believe will eventually outweigh the debts they have incurred.
