OpenAI Launches Codex Micro: A New Mini Keyboard for Developers
OpenAI has launched its first hardware, the Codex Micro mini keyboard, designed to enhance productivity for Codex users, featuring customizable shortcuts and real-time status feedback.

OpenAI has officially unveiled its first hardware product, the Codex Micro, a mini keyboard developed in partnership with Canadian manufacturer Work Loader. This innovative device is designed to enhance the workflow for users of OpenAI's Codex tool, particularly among developers.

Launched at the end of June 2026, the Codex Micro, also referred to as kbd-1.0-codex-micro, is marketed as a "command center for agentic work." This compact device aims to streamline interactions with Codex, allowing users to activate common commands quickly through customizable shortcuts.
Custom Shortcuts for Enhanced Efficiency
The Codex Micro features a unique design that straddles the line between a mini keyboard and a macro pad. It is equipped with twelve buttons, six of which are transparent, while the others display icons familiar to users of the Codex app. Users can assign these transparent buttons to their most frequently used commands, with the package including 32 interchangeable keycaps to help visually represent these shortcuts.
RGB Feedback for Real-Time Status Updates
One of the standout features of the Codex Micro is its RGB feedback system. The six transparent buttons illuminate in different colors to indicate the status of various agents active within Codex. For instance, a green light signifies an unread chat, while blue indicates that an agent is processing information. An orange light alerts users to a question or a need for user approval, and a red light indicates an error. This feature allows Codex users to monitor agent statuses without the need to switch between multiple windows.
Integrated Joystick and Dial for Workflow Management
Adding to its functionality, the Codex Micro includes a small joystick located at the top right corner, which users can utilize to initiate common workflows in Codex, such as reviewing pull requests or debugging errors. Additionally, a dial in the upper left corner allows users to adjust the reasoning level of the AI, enabling faster processing for simpler tasks or increased cognitive engagement for more complex jobs.
Pricing and Availability
The Codex Micro is priced at $230, roughly equivalent to €200. However, it is currently out of stock on OpenAI's website, with Work Loader noting that the initial supply is limited.
