Two-Thirds of Videos Viewed by New TikTok Users Are AI Slop

Anyone creating a new account on TikTok should brace themselves for AI-generated content. According to a study, the platform actually serves these clips more frequently than videos created by humans.

New TikTok Accounts and AI Slop

The results of the study show that nearly 60 percent of all videos that new TikTok users see are generated by AI. The share of clips created by humans is significantly lower. The differences become even more apparent when compared to other platforms. The same methodology applied to YouTube showed that new users on Google's video platform see 21 percent AI videos.

To find this out, the researchers first identified the 20 most popular categories on TikTok and their most used hashtags. Subsequently, these categories and their suggested videos were examined for AI slop, and the percentage was recorded in comparison to human-made content.
