WhatsApp to Introduce Birthday Reminders: Here’s What You Need to Know
WhatsApp is launching a birthday reminder feature to help users remember important dates. Here's what you need to do to prepare for it.

WhatsApp is set to roll out a new feature aimed at helping users remember important birthdays. This upcoming functionality is designed to prevent the awkwardness that can arise from forgetting a loved one's special day, especially when there are numerous tools available to keep track of such events.

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the messaging platform will incorporate a reminder system that notifies users when a contact's birthday is approaching. Additionally, there will be a dedicated section within the app that displays all upcoming birthdays from your contacts, making it easier to keep track of important dates.
Initially, one might think that this feature relies on the birthday information users provide during registration. However, that is not the case. WhatsApp collects this data primarily to comply with regulations regarding the app's use by younger individuals. To benefit from the birthday reminder feature, users must manually input the birthday details themselves.
The reminders are sourced from your phone's contact list rather than from WhatsApp directly. This means that if you wish to receive birthday notifications, you must save the relevant dates in your phone's contact entries. This approach has the added benefit of maintaining user privacy, as birthday information remains stored on individual devices, preventing unauthorized access.
Another advantage of this system is the control it offers users. You can choose whether or not a specific birthday is displayed in WhatsApp by simply omitting the information from your contact entry in the phone app. Currently, Meta is working on this birthday reminder feature specifically for the Android version of WhatsApp. Following successful internal testing, the feature is expected to be released in the app's beta version soon.
