In the USA, Anthropic is increasingly under pressure. The government in Vienna is now urging the EU to recruit the AI company to relocate its headquarters. However, the chances are slim.

The Austrian government aims to attract the American AI corporation Anthropic to Europe. A letter to the EU Commission is intended to lay the groundwork for this – the chances remain unclear. Digitalization Secretary Alexander Pröll (ÖVP) has sent a letter to the responsible EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, Bloomberg reports.

In the letter, Pröll urges the EU Commission to consider appropriate steps. The EU should focus on legal certainty, market access, capital, and values that could be attractive to Anthropic. How this would practically unfold and how Anthropic would operate in Europe remains unspecified in the letter. Anthropic itself has not commented on the proposal.

Europe Wants to Become More Independent

The initiative shows how much Europe wants to reduce its dependence on American and Chinese technology. The urgency of these efforts has increased since the inauguration of US President Donald Trump. His tariff policies made this dependency starkly visible.

Even more significant was a recent move by the US government: it blocked foreign access to Anthropic's most powerful AI models, Mythos and Fable. This demonstrated the control Washington has in this area. Europe currently lacks an AI model that can compete with the strongest US models – for instance, Mistral comes from France, while the German provider Aleph-Alpha is set to be acquired by a Canadian AI firm.

Anthropic in Conflict with Washington

A move to Europe does not seem entirely out of the question for Anthropic, although it is unrealistic. The AI company has recently clashed multiple times with the US government. Before the release of its most powerful AI model in the spring, a dispute escalated with the Pentagon. Anthropic had set red lines for military AI deployment. The US Department of Defense responded with drastic measures, and Anthropic fought back legally.

Nevertheless, there are indications of further cooperation with the US government. Additionally, Anthropic is likely to find it easier to raise significant funds in the US, as it also plans to go public there. Should a relocation occur, the US government would likely attempt to economically sabotage the move. Anthropic could then lose access to its currently most important market.
