Transition Challenges
The initial plan was to complete the transition to Gemini by the end of 2025. However, complications during the migration process have meant that Google Assistant remains operational on various Android devices, including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Now, Google is poised to finally replace Google Assistant with Gemini.
According to reports from Android Authority, Google has begun notifying users about the impending discontinuation of Google Assistant. Emails sent to users indicated that the rollout of Gemini on compatible Android devices will commence on September 4, 2026.
No Going Back
Once users make the switch to Gemini, they will not be able to revert back to Google Assistant. This means that the voice assistant will no longer be available on smartphones, tablets, or connected devices like smartwatches, headphones, or earbuds.
Gemini will become the default assistant across these devices, but users can expect a familiar experience. The activation process will remain largely unchanged, allowing users to still initiate commands with "Hey Google" or by pressing the power button for an extended period. Google claims that Gemini will offer more natural conversations, enhancing user interaction.
Gradual Rollout for Automotive
For users of Android Automotive, the transition to Gemini may take longer. As reported by mobiflip.de, Google has just begun the distribution process, and it may take some time before all vehicles are updated.
Notably, Gemini will not be available on older Android smartphones that lack sufficient storage. To use the new AI chatbot, devices must run Android 10 or later and have a minimum of 2GB of RAM.
