Innovative Robot Plays Acoustic Guitar

A creative engineer has designed a robot capable of playing any song on an acoustic guitar. This DIY project, reminiscent of the robotic band Compressorhead, is expected to expand into other musical instruments in the future.

Since 2013, Compressorhead, a band composed entirely of robots, has been captivating audiences at music festivals and trade shows. This Berlin-based group features a guitar-playing robot named Fingers, who performs on both electric and acoustic instruments.

In a similar vein, Reddit user Megcell has developed a guitar-playing robot that attaches to a real acoustic guitar. The robot utilizes one part to strum the strings and another to play the chords.

To bring the guitar robot to life, Megcell has integrated 28 servomotors. The strumming mechanism is designed to lift slightly after each contact with the strings, allowing for greater control over articulation and dynamics while preventing unwanted string contact.

Currently, the mechanical robot is still in the development phase, as Megcell tests various materials for the strumming mechanism. The goal is to achieve an optimal balance between sound quality and durability.

Versatile Music Playback

As reported by The Verge, the melodies played by this robot are not pre-programmed. In a demonstration, it performed a rendition of Luv(sic), a track by the late Japanese hip-hop producer Nujabes and rapper Shing02. The robot is capable of processing MusicXML files, which theoretically allows it to play any song.

Despite some feedback from Reddit users suggesting that the robot's sound still resembles that of a machine, Megcell remains focused on establishing a solid technical foundation before incorporating more expressive techniques. Future enhancements are expected to include variable strumming strengths, vibrato, slides, and bends.

Ultimately, Megcell envisions developing a range of robots to play different instruments, potentially culminating in a robotic band inspired by Compressorhead.

Commercial Plans

At least the guitar robot is set to hit the market, with Megcell announcing plans for a Kickstarter campaign, although no specific launch date has been revealed yet. Interest appears to be growing, as indicated by responses in her Reddit post.
