Large language models don't need to be as massive anymore to function well. But can they also run locally on mid-range laptops? t3n Tool Time clarifies this.

Nowadays, most people using generative AI do so through a chat interface in their browser. Tools like ChatGPT or Claude have hundreds of millions of users, and even though discussions in professional circles revolve more around agent-based coding or complex automations, regular users hardly come into contact with these.
However, it is no longer necessary to have an account with OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic to utilize AI. You don't even need an internet connection anymore. Open-weight models like Qwen or GLM can also be run on your own hardware. Big names like Nvidia or Google also offer smaller, more open models with Nemotron and Gemma, which you can download and use for free.
