Microsoft Tests New Windows 11 Feature by Building Airplane Cabin

In a unique approach to testing its latest feature for Windows 11, Microsoft has constructed a replica of an airplane cabin. This innovative setup was designed to assess the functionality of the new ‘Shared Audio’ feature, which allows two users to connect their headphones to a single device without any lag or need for additional hardware.

Marcus Ash, the Lead for Design and Research at Windows, shared insights about this unconventional testing method on his X profile. He explained that the ‘Shared Audio’ feature aims to create a seamless audio experience for two users watching content together. The airplane cabin setup was chosen to mimic real-life scenarios where individuals share small spaces and screens, while also dealing with background noise.

Ash elaborated, "Tight spaces, shared screens, background noise. Two people trying to watch something together without making it complicated. […] A big part of design and research is getting closer to these real moments: observing, simulating, prototyping, and understanding the context around the experience."

After testing, Microsoft utilized the cabin replica to showcase the feature in action. A video embedded in the announcement features two boys enjoying a movie on a Microsoft Surface tablet while aboard the airplane setup. To block out ambient noise, both boys used headphones equipped with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

For those eager to try out the ‘Shared Audio’ feature in Windows 11, patience may be required. Microsoft is rolling out this update in phases to users. Once available, it can be accessed through the quick settings menu located in the lower right corner of the taskbar. Here, users can also find other audio settings and internet connection options. To begin sharing audio, simply select ‘Shared Audio,’ choose the compatible paired headphones from the list, and start enjoying shared content.
