The Impact of AI on Time Management: A Shift Towards Social Media
The rise of generative AI is reshaping time management, with users reallocating saved time to social media rather than offline activities, highlighting a growing digital divide.

The introduction of generative artificial intelligence into households is fundamentally transforming daily time management. Tasks that were once a burden, like tax filing, can now be outsourced to systems like ChatGPT, allowing users to reclaim significant amounts of time. However, this recovered time is often spent scrolling through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
Insights from Real User Data
A recent study conducted by researchers from Stanford University, the University of California, and the University of Southern California sheds light on this phenomenon. Published on the academic platform SSRN, the research analyzed real web traffic data from over 200,000 households in the U.S. between 2021 and 2024. Unlike traditional surveys that can be influenced by self-perception biases, this analysis provides objective insights into actual user behavior. The researchers were able to track the websites visited before, during, and after the use of large language models.
Significant Gains in Efficiency
The findings reveal that households are primarily using ChatGPT for productive tasks. There is a notable correlation between the use of text-based assistants and visits to educational platforms, specialized job boards, and government information sites. According to TechXplore, which summarized the study's results, the researchers estimate a productivity gain of between 76% and 176% due to the targeted support of AI in home computing tasks.
Time Saved is Time Spent on Social Media
Despite these tasks being completed more quickly thanks to automation, the total screen time for users has not decreased. This is where the study presents a surprising twist: the time saved through technology does not lead to offline relaxation but instead seamlessly transitions into increased consumption of social media.
The digital leisure time for identified ChatGPT users surged by 31 percentage points. While the total productive screen time remained constant, the substantial increase in content output allowed for significantly more time spent scrolling through platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
A Double-Edged Sword
For researchers, this indicates that while generative artificial intelligence alleviates some household burdens, it comes with an unexpected cost. Delegating cognitive tasks to external services poses structural risks to users' attention spans, especially when the reclaimed time is predominantly reinvested in algorithmically driven short video platforms.
The Growing Digital Divide
Moreover, these substantial time advantages are unevenly distributed across society. The collected data highlights an increasing technological divide, with younger individuals aged 18 to 34 being the primary adopters of these new tools.
This effect is exacerbated when considering household income. Households earning over $100,000 annually utilize artificial intelligence more frequently and effectively than their lower-income counterparts.
Michael Blank, one of the researchers, warns that this unequal usage could further deepen existing socioeconomic disparities. "If there were a more equitable use of technology at home, these gains would be distributed more evenly, rather than potentially exacerbating inequality," Blank cautions in the accompanying publication from his university.
