Classic Command & Conquer: Generals Now Available on iPhone and iPad Thanks to a Hobby Developer

The beloved strategy game, Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour, has made its way to modern devices like iPads and iPhones. This impressive feat was accomplished by developer Claude Fable, who collaborated with Ammaar Reshi to port the classic game to Apple's platforms. Reshi, who works as a lead in Product and Design at Google AI Studio, tackled various challenges to bring this game back to life for a new audience.

Released over 23 years ago, Command & Conquer: Generals quickly became a favorite among gamers, especially after the release of its strong expansion, Zero Hour, in the same year. Now, thanks to modern technology and community support, the game has been adapted for iPads, iPhones, and newer Macs.

How Command & Conquer Runs on iPads and iPhones

Reshi uploaded the project as open-source code on GitHub, allowing users to enjoy Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour on their devices. This effort is not an emulation; instead, it is a native implementation for the respective platforms. The foundation for this project was laid when Electronic Arts released the source code of the real-time strategy game under the GPL-v3 license last year. Reshi also built upon community projects that fixed bugs and created Linux ports of the game.

However, the journey was not without its hurdles. Reshi faced significant challenges, particularly with the iPhone version, which required a writable file system. iOS applications, as Reshi noted, can only access files with read permissions. Consequently, he had to meticulously adjust every single file and path to ensure the game functioned correctly.

Another obstacle was adapting the controls for touch input instead of a mouse. A new system was necessary to translate touch gestures into mouse movements. Additionally, Reshi and Fable had to make the DirectX 8 renderer compatible with Apple's Metal system, which involved several translations into other graphics engines like Vulkan.

How to Play the Classic on Apple Devices

It’s essential to note that the project relies solely on the necessary files to run Command & Conquer: Generals on iPads, iPhones, and newer Macs. Reshi does not provide the game files themselves, meaning players must purchase a copy of Command & Conquer: Generals beforehand—available on platforms like Steam or GOG.

After acquiring the game, users can follow the instructions on GitHub to get it running on their devices. Looking ahead, Reshi has plans to bring Renegade, another title from the Command & Conquer series, to macOS and iOS. Currently, there is no native version of Renegade for Apple platforms, only community projects that offer some compatibility.
