FritzOS 8.50 Beta Update Introduces Enhanced Router Features

Fritz has rolled out a new beta version of the upcoming FritzOS 8.50 update, unveiling features that were not present in earlier laboratory versions. This update is now available for download on seven router models.

Smart Check: Real-Time Router Status via MyFritz App

Earlier this year, in May, a preview of the forthcoming FritzOS 8.50 was shared, highlighting improvements in user-friendliness, including a smartphone app, and the integration of Matter into the Fritz ecosystem.

Now, a fresh batch of features has emerged, particularly focusing on security enhancements. One of the standout additions is the Smart Check tool. According to the manufacturer AVM, this diagnostic tool displays "the current state of the Fritzbox directly on the app's home screen." It offers real-time insights into functionalities such as telephony, home network, and WLAN, and can alert users to issues like a "missing mesh connection to a repeater."

This development indicates a move towards making smartphones the primary interface for managing home networks.

DNS Filter: Protecting Against Malware and Phishing

Another significant feature introduced in this beta update is the DNS filter. This tool is designed to protect all devices within the home network from malware and phishing attacks. By blocking websites at the router level, not only computers and smartphones but also Smart TVs and smart home devices can benefit from enhanced security.

AVM explains, "Websites known for excessive advertising, tracking, or malware can be blocked, as well as phishing sites, botnets, or other unwanted content. If a device within the home network attempts to access a blocked address, the FRITZ!Box automatically denies the request."

Users can also opt to utilize freely available and community-maintained blocklists to filter out advertisements, trackers, and malware.

Enhanced Features for Communication and Stability

The update also brings automatic prioritization for real-time communications, such as video conferencing, ensuring a reliable connection when it is most needed. Additionally, FritzFailsafe, the fail-safe feature for Fritzboxes, is now available for 4G and 5G models. These routers can utilize a LAN connection and will switch to mobile data only when the wired connection fails, maintaining a stable internet connection.

Other new features include energy-saving functions and automations for smart homes. AVM also mentions previously announced capabilities, such as SOS calls and compatibility of the Fritzbox 5690 Pro with the Matter standard.

As for the official release date of FritzOS 8.50, no information has been provided yet. The new beta version is currently available for the Fritzbox models 5690, 5690 Pro, 5590 Fiber, 7690, 7590 AX, 7590, and 7530 AX.
