Do you need a new Gmail address, but creating a new account is too cumbersome? Then there's a practical alternative that allows you to create a huge number of new addresses in just a few steps.

Many people rely on a single email address for their entire digital communication. While this keeps messages consolidated in one place, it can quickly become cumbersome when you need a new email address. This is especially true when you want to sign up for a newsletter to get a discount code or when you don't want to share your main address with lesser-known online services.

Creating Gmail Addresses with Dots and Plus Signs

Instead of switching to a new Gmail account or using so-called email aliases, you can apply a simple trick to obtain a variety of variations of your email address. The trick: If you insert a dot in the so-called "local part" before the @ sign, Gmail ignores these inputs. You will receive a new address, but they will still be forwarded to your main inbox.

So, if you want to sign up for a newsletter and don't want to use your email address "[email protected]", you can simply insert a dot at any position. Thus, "[email protected]" or "[email protected]" will also forward the message to your regular email address.

For the service you are registering with, however, the dot makes a big difference. If you first register with the address without a dot and then with a variation, you will have two different accounts. It works similarly with a plus sign. You can simply add a plus and then another term or a random string at the end of the "local part".

Email addresses created this way also forward the message to your main inbox. The advantage compared to dots: You can give each individual service a "unique" email address – for example, "[email protected]". Additionally, with the extra naming, you can set up filters in Gmail that automatically sort messages containing specific terms in the address into appropriate folders. This way, your inbox becomes automatically more organized.
